Emme - Supermodel, Television Personality, Best-Selling Author Committed To Do Something
It's no wonder People magazine selected her twice as one of the "50 Most Beautiful People" and Ladies' Home Journal chose her as one of the "Most Important Women in America" and one of the "Most Fascinating Women of the Year." And the accolades don't stop there: she was honored as a Glamour magazine "Woman of the Year" and as one of Biography magazine's "25 Most Influential Women."
Do Something believes young people have the power to make a difference. It is the organization's aim to inspire, support and celebrate a generation of do-ers: people who see the need to do something, believe in their ability to get it done, and then take action.
The Do Something website is a community where young people learn, listen, speak, vote, volunteer, ask, and take action to make the world a better place.
For the past several years, Emme has been involved with DO SOMETHING. She explains her commitment in the following interview.

Do Something "inspires, supports and celebrates a generation of do-ers: people who see the need to do something, believe in their ability to get it done, and then take action." How did you first become involved with the organization?
I met CEO Nancy Lublin years ago when she founded Dress for Success, so I know firsthand about Nancy's passion and ability to make things happen. We've become good friends over the years. I attended my first Do Something event over 5 years ago and was unbelievably impressed by the incredible young people who spoke of their inspirations, aspirations and the outreach work they were doing in the private sector. I knew immediately that I had to embrace Do Something; I was literally hooked!
What would you suggest to someone who didn't have a lot of time, but wanted to become involved with volunteering?
Network among your friends to find a group that you know is doing worthwhile work and get involved in an organization. Typically, they are well prepared for new volunteers, and can put you to work right away. Jump in, be a soldier and let them guide you in what needs to be done. It will make your volunteer time more impactful if you don't have to spend time setting up a routine because it has already been done for you. Start by setting aside just a few hours a month: be it stamping envelopes, putting together a new book shelf, painting a wall, calling for donations, writing letters, holding a hand or giving a hug, it is all important and will be much appreciated! My prediction is that once you start slowly, you will find it so rewarding that you will make more time to give.
How has charity work enriched your life?
Enormously. I know I am a better person for reaching outside of myself, for stretching beyond my comfort zone, and for being there when asked to step up. I know that each one of us has the ability to share of ourselves, either financially or emotionally, with those in need. Money is never turned away, but if you are unable to contribute financially, you will find that a set of hands and a good heart are just as helpful and just as appreciated. At home, I make sure my daughter understands the goodwill in giving when she donates her toys and dolls to less fortunate children. It is so easy to take for granted the necessities in life, but once you see the other side of privilege, you count your blessings and hold those dear to you even closer.
You have been so successful in promoting self-acceptance through your work as a model, lecturer, author and tv personality. What advice would you give moms to encourage self-acceptance in their daughters?
I know as moms we need to educate ourselves and learn that perfection is an unattainable myth and marketing tool. Our first step as moms is to learn to accept ourselves, as we are today, so we can in turn accept the individuality of our daughters when they express themselves. Let's empower our daughters to use their voices while encouraging them to expand their horizons about their own personal assets both emotionally and physically. Above all, let's have an open line of communication and provide a place for sharing without risk of judgment.
You are well known to so many as America’s First Plus-Size Super Model...Please share three of your favorite fashion tips with us!
1. Let your personal light shine, never try to overcompensate with makeup, accessories, or trends.
2. Invest in a new bag, scarf or shoes instead of a whole new wardrobe. You'll save money and look like you know what's happening on the runway.
3. Don't be overly committed to one personal style. Never be afraid of hand me downs: mixing and matching is what fashion is all about. Make a statement and be your bad self!
You are an accomplished woman who has had much success, what is next on the horizon for you?
I'm lecturing around the country on positive body image and self esteem, working on a couple of TV projects and developing my line of clothes. I have a feeling another book is brewing on the horizon but I'm not rushing into that! One step at a time!
