In the spring of 2006, Corine Couwenberg, President and Founder of nonprofitshoppingmall.com, began developing an idea that she felt could raise substantial and unrestricted funds for nonprofit organizations. It was a simple idea: give nonprofits the advantage to fundraise using the everyday practice of online shopping. She felt that the explosive trend of online shopping could become a powerful fundraising tool and help bring philanthropy to the broader public. By simply shopping online, consumers would be given the opportunity to support the nonprofit organization of their choice and, so, turn everyday shopping into everyday giving. With a strong background in sales, marketing and nonprofit development, she set the wheels in motion to launch nonprofitshoppingmall.com.
With less than 25% of funding for charitable, nonprofit organizations in the US coming from institutional giving, individual donations are vital to the survival and ongoing work of these nonprofits. Events such as 9/11, the Tsunami of 2004, Hurricane Katrina and other natural disasters, domestic and worldwide, have demonstrated the value of those organizations that step in to fill the void where governments don't or cannot.
