IN THE SPOTLIGHT

RAINN

RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) is the nation’s largest anti-sexual assault organization and was named one of "America's 100 Best Charities" by Worth magazine. RAINN created and operates the National Sexual Assault Hotlines (800.656.HOPE and rainn.org) in partnership with over 1,100 local rape crisis centers across the country. The hotlines have helped more than 1.2 million people since 1994. RAINN also carries out programs to prevent sexual assault, help victims and ensure that rapists are brought to justice.

ON OUR SITE

Women For Women International

Across the globe, armed conflicts have reached an unprecedented number. Ninety percent of those injured or killed in today’s conflicts are civilians, 75 percent of whom are women and children.

As never before, women are disproportionately affected by war and civil strife. Women are targeted for ethnic cleansing and subjected to rape as a tool of war. They lose male family members who leave to fight and are killed. Many are displaced from their own homes. When widowed by war, they are thrust into the role of sole provider, often without marketable skills or a viable means to earn an income and often in communities that do not value their place in society.

Founded in 1993, Women for Women International helps women in war-torn regions rebuild their lives by providing financial and emotional support, job skills training, rights awareness and leadership education and access to business skills, capital and markets.

Through these programs, women become confident, independent and productive as they embrace the importance of their new roles in rebuilding their families, their communities and ultimately, their nations. Women for Women International has learned through serving socially excluded women in conflict and post-conflict countries that engaging women is the most effective avenue toward creating lasting change and stability within a society.

Susan G. Komen For The Cure

For the past 25 years, Komen for the Cure® has played a critical role in every major advance in the fight against breast cancer - transforming how the world talks about and treats this disease and helping to turn millions of breast cancer patients into breast cancer survivors. Today, Komen for the Cure® is the world's largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. And thanks to events like the Komen Race for the Cure®, it is fast becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.

This 25th anniversary is not solely a celebration of victories to date, but should be regarded as a watershed moment in the fight to end breast cancer worldwide. This is truly a cause without boarders, a global disease that could affect some 10,000,000 women around the world over the next 25 years. Keeping those numbers in mind and recognizing the growing global impact of breast cancer, the shared challenges among countries worldwide and the value of coordinated advocacy in the battle against this disease, Susan G. Komen for The Cure ® seeks to invest more than $2 billion over the next decade in breast health care and treatment for the underserved and in research to discover the causes of breast cancer and, ultimately, its cures.

A Word From Our Founder

Hi All -

So while we got a rather late start on last month’s newsletter, I’ve been trying to stay well ahead of the curve by getting this one out a little earlier. Why the rush you ask? Well for one thing, with Mother’s Day just ahead, I feel the need to do a little mothering myself and remind you all to shop for that special woman in your life -- right here and right now! There aren’t a lot of shopping days left until Mother’s Day, and with all those flowers traveling far and wide this coming weekend, what better time to buy than right now?

I have to admit that in some weird way I’ve rather enjoyed this Mother’s Day frenzy as it’s forced me, once again, to analyze the site’s message and test drive more of its retailers. It’s also made me think back as to why I started this project and what I was looking to achieve in doing so. Given today’s skyrocketing gasoline and food costs, the deep downturn in the housing market and a death-defying drop in the Consumer Confidence Index from 111.9% in July 2007 to its current 62.3%, I can easily say that my objectives have held true in wanting to turn everyday shoppers into everyday givers without stretching anyone’s financial limitations and finding that these goals are as timely now as ever. While we may all think twice before buying the latest fashion trends in multiples, or hold off on that way cool techno gadget, we still need to buy our everyday goods and services, our special occasion gifts and the things we need to keep our households from falling into disarray. Now more than ever, making a purchase that gives back just makes sense.

If you get a chance to catch The Today Show on Friday, May 9, you’ll hear that message again as René Syler, scheduled to appear, talks about her Good Enough Mother take on the holiday and how gifts that give back, give more right out the door. You’ll also hear similar messages from other guests and you know you’ll hear it here all day long. And when we’re done with Mother’s Day, you’ll hear it again as our next batch of special occasion recipients get set to take center stage – grads, dads and brides, of course.

On a more serious note, our People Who Care interview with actress Christina Ricci sheds some much needed light on the staggering statistics of rape, incest and sexual assault which continues to occur somewhere in America at the alarming rate of every two minutes. Also hard to grasp is that almost half of all victims are under 18 and some 80% are under 30. Until we started working on this piece featuring RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) – the country’s leading anti-sexual assault organization, I was only partially informed with respect to these crime statistics, their ongoing psychological effects and where public policy issues currently stand concerning reporting, prosecuting and DNA testing. While disturbing on many levels, the wealth of information available on the RAINN website is an invaluable tool and I hope you’ll take the time to read it through and learn from its hugely important messages.

We want to especially thank Christina Ricci for her participation in bringing this to our and your attention and we encourage you to become a RAINNMaker. Help support the organization’s ongoing initiatives by shopping for them here throughout the month of May.

With our emphasis on women this month, we take a closer look at the global impact of women in reshaping war-torn nations and rebuilding healthy sustainable economies by highlighting the good work being done by Women For Women International. We also want to underscore the breadth and scope of what Susan G. Komen for The Cure® has on deck for their next 25 years and we want to take you into the townships and individual communities being served by the San Felipe Humanitarian Alliance, a small but active southern California nonprofit with a broad, encompassing reach.

And as for us -- Team NPSM -- we’re off and running! From LA to Boston to New Orleans and then Chicago for the Cause Marketing Forum, we’re on the move, gaining ground and look forward to reporting back on all things new next month!

Talk to you all again soon -

In The Air And On The Air Waves – It’s The Komen Warriors

Mother’s Day – it’s really a shame that it’s only once a year because there are just so many great ways to show mom how much she means to you. One extraordinary and very funny mom I know also happens to be a Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Ambassador and graced our inaugural People Who Care feature last October. This would be, of course, Good Enough Mother author, René Syler.

How Does Your Garden Grow?

Whether it’s YOUR mother or OUR Mother in a greater sense, there is no doubt that these two forces of nature appear to work hand-in-hand, enriching our lives with an appreciation for all things living and green. What better way to help nourish this special gift than by remembering mom with the bounty of earth’s beauty by sending exceptionally fresh florals or by providing the right supplies to make her garden grow greener still.
